Radioiodine Therapy (RIT) abroad

Radioiodine Therapy (RIT) — Effective Treatment for Thyroid Disorders

Radioiodine therapy (RIT) is a modern and effective method for treating thyroid diseases using radioactive iodine (I-131). It is used to destroy residual thyroid tissue or cancerous cells after surgery, as well as to treat hyperthyroidism, Graves' disease, or recurrence of thyroid cancer.

When is RIT recommended?

Radioiodine therapy is commonly prescribed in the following cases:

  • after thyroid cancer surgery as part of follow-up treatment;
  • in cases of hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis when other methods are ineffective;
  • for recurrence or metastases that absorb iodine.

How is treatment prepared?

There are two main methods of TSH stimulation before I-131 administration:

  • Option A (Thyrogen): Thyrogen injections 2 days before hospital admission. This modern method does not require medication withdrawal or dietary changes.
  • Option B: Withdrawal of thyroid hormone medication and adherence to a low-iodine diet for 2–4 weeks.

The treating physician selects the most appropriate option based on your medical history and current condition.

Possible side effects of RIT:

  • temporary neck swelling or sore throat;
  • fatigue, dry mouth, taste changes;
  • reduced fertility in men with repeated treatments;
  • in rare cases — salivary gland issues or secondary cancers.

Most side effects are mild and temporary.
